Under New York's seat belt laws, all front-seat occupants of a vehicle are required to wear a seat belt. All back-seat occupants under the age of 16 must wear a seat belt. All occupants under the age of eight must be restrained in the appropriate child restraint system (age-, weight- and height-appropriate booster seat, car seat, etc.).
Violation of New York's seat belt laws can result in penalties that include:
- Fine of up to $50 for all occupants over the age of 16
- Fine of up to $100 if the violation involves an occupant under the age of 16
- Three traffic point penalties
